INDIE ROOTZ RECORDS  – SUMMER UPDATE  By Brian Kotler

INDIE ROOTZ RECORDS  - SUMMER UPDATE  By Brian Kotler

One of the many things that my partner, producer and multi-talented musician Bobby Pottinger has taught me is “You can’t rush music”. While I tend to stay on the “business side”, I do often come up with musical concepts and ideas in which Bobby makes them into reality. I also manage to bring in a lot of the artists who have worked with us. It’s our differences that make us who we are and we also have become brothers.

For the last 6 months or so, we have been working on 3 awesome EP’s for Asher, Universal Impress and Zantelly. These artists are Montreal rising stars, we saw their talent and energy from the start. And soon enough, these artists will be headliners. By the fall of 2025 we expect all the EPs to be ready for release, but as Bobby likes to say “You can’t rush music”. Summer is always a busy time for both artists and musicians.

Indie Rootz Records is known for our top notch Reggae and Dancehall instrumentals (riddims) but we have also ventured into Blues, RnB, Rock (and even Pink Floyd). We love to think “Outside the box”, why be ordinary when you can be great. Not long ago, I met up with Pamputtae, international dancehall artist (and queen) out of Jamaica, when she was visiting Ontario. As everyone knows, Pamputtae can work it from ‘conscious’ to ‘slack’ and she sings and deejays like the best of them! She also is always looking new and different, as all professional artists do. So whether it was luck or fate, we both seized the opportunity. So this fall, you will be able to look out for Pamputtae’s next new hit song; her first time on a rock-pop instrumental (riddim). We are both very excited about this “out of the box” single and the equally exciting video to follow.

Tony Anthony, Rad Dixon, and the legendary Horace Martin

Inspired by a vision to transcend negativity, the 2time2 aka 2by2 Riddim project was undertaken to create a Riddim that promotes positivity. To bring this concept to life, tasjayproductions collaborated with Ifield Joseph, a talented bass guitarist and drummer, and keyboardist. Street buzz indicates that the 2Time2 aka 2By2 Riddim boasts an enhanced, upbeat quality. Following the completion of the reggae Riddim project, the challenge lay in identifying top artists to complement the Riddim. This task was rendered more difficult by the impressive array of reggae and dancehall talent within the tasjayproductions camp, including Esdras IS-RA-EL, Tony Anthony, Rad Dixon, and the legendary Horace Martin. In essence, this project represents another outstanding reggae endeavor from tasjayproductions, with a scheduled release date of August 8th.

THE HUMAN RIGHTS BAND SET TO RELEASE BRAND NEW ALBUM

THE HUMAN RIGHTS BAND SET TO RELEASE BRAND NEW ALBUM

The Human Rights first came together in 2007, united by the talents and vision of Friendlyness, a Toronto Reggae lion who had previously worked with Big Sugar, Culture Shock and Truths and Rights. He was soon joined by drummer Eric Woolston (Maylee Todd, the Hooded Fang), versatile bassman Tyler Wagler, and keyboardist Bernie Pitters (Toots & the Maytals, Hit Squad), who sadly passed away in 2023. The album “One People” carries on Pitters’ loving memory and his spirit continues to propel the band forward.

The Human Rights quickly established a reputation for showcasing their original material while opening for the likes of The Wailers, Gregory Isaacs, Beres Hammond, John Holt, Freddie McGregor, Sanchez and other top international reggae artistes. In 2014, much loved Toronto vocalist Tréson (who has recorded with the likes of Black Uhuru, Spearhead and Mykal Rose) joined the band, giving the Human Rights a distinctively powerful two-man frontline that seamlessly moves between modern Roots Reggae, Lover’s Rock, Soul, R&B, and Dancehall vibes.

After Bernie’s health began preventing him from touring, Canadian keyboard legend Dave Jackson stepped in. The declaration of Human Rights horn section, featuring members of The Heavyweights Brass Band, Kune and Shout! The Band, adds the musical icing on the cake. After making their debut album ‘One Thing” in 2010, The Human Rights worked with Big Sugar’s Gordie Johnson on their 2016 self-titled collection that solidified their sound both in the studio and onstage.

That energy was carried forward on 2021’s “Reggae Strong”, which Amplify Music Magazine described as “their finest album to date, while once again proving Reggae’s ability to unite and inspire everyone struggling to get through tough times.” Expect more of the same from The Human Rights on ‘One People”, an album that arrives just when it is needed the most. Stay tuned and keep up to date by visiting thehumanrights.ca and look out for the band performing in your city for 2025
